This website is a personal digital garden. It is designed to be lightweight, readable, and respectful of your attention.

1. The Tech Stack

  • Engine: Built on WordPress using the Twenty Twenty-Five theme.
  • Typography: The site uses Georgia for all text to replicate the feel of a printed page. Interface elements use your device’s native System Fonts to ensure zero load times.
  • Hosting: Self-hosted on a Virtual Private Server (VPS) (located The European Union).
  • Operating System: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.
  • Services: Background automation for sports alerts is handled by custom Python scripts and the open-source ntfy server.

2. Privacy & Data

I do not use Google Analytics or tracking pixels. Here is what I do use:

  • Analytics: I use Koko Analytics to count page views. It does not use cookies or store your IP address. It respects “Do Not Track” requests. The data never leaves this site’s database.
  • Forms & Messaging:
    • The Anonymous Form on the ‘Keep in Touch’ page collects no identifying data (name, email, or IP address). The message is not archived by any external form processing service.
    • Message Delivery and Storage: All site notifications and messages are routed securely through Mailgun (EU) and delivered directly to my encrypted Mailbox.org inbox (EU). This ensures that your message content is processed under strict data protection standards and stored on privacy-focused infrastructure.
  • Chat: The web chat link connects directly to Libera.chat. If you use their web client, your connection is managed by their servers according to their privacy policy.
  • Guestbook and Blog: Comments are checked by Antispam Bee (privacy-compliant) and stored in my WordPress database.
  • Encryption: For sensitive communications, I support PGP. You can view my public key and fingerprint here.

3. Your Rights

If you have left a comment or sent a message and want it deleted, just email me at letters@douglasireland.com. I will scrub it from the records. No questions asked.

4. Credits

This site is built on the work of others. I try to give credit where it is due:

  • Music: “Itty Bitty 8 Bit” by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com).
    Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License.
  • Sound Effects: Modem handshake courtesy of SoundJay.com.
  • Visuals: Book and media covers sourced via Wikipedia for critical review. 90s GIFs sourced from Tenor (user: hugobitola) and Giphy.
  • Blog Images: Individual editorial images are credited in their respective captions.
  • Sports Data: Match schedules and live score updates for the football score alerts service are sourced via FotMob.
